A modest glass jug engraved with the name of an old Croydon pub has prompted Heritage to examine the site's history.

Phyllis White from Winchester wrote to the Guardian asking if anyone could shed any light on the origin of a glass jug she came across in her house.

She said: "I'm in the process of moving to a smaller house and came across the glass jug. I can only think that it came from my husband, who died a few years ago."

"At first I wondered whether the Globe would like it returned to them but having learned it no longer exists I'm intrigued to find out a bit more about it before I decide what to do with it."

"I can only assume that it came from my late husband's aunt and uncle who lived in Croydon all their lives. They liked a good drink and it may have been given to one of them who then passed it on to my husband.

"It's not anything smart, Just a plain, modest glass jug and has no special engravings, it just reads: 'With compliments from Mr and Mrs Shenton, The Globe, Old Town, Croydon, Xmas 1926'.

"Perhaps they were given to regular customers or it was a prize for something."

Records at the Croydon Local Studies Library and Archive Service show that the Globe pub was located at 36 Old Town, Croydon, until 1952 when it closed.

By 1969 it had been sold off for redevelopment and later was turned into housing a few years later.

A G Shenton took over as the licensee in 1926 and was landlord there until at least 1939.

Croydon pub expert Peter Walker said: "The earliest reference there is to the Globe in Croydon's rate books is in 1843 and it also had a brewery on the premises which was unusual.

"There were three pubs very close together on Old Town, where Cromwell House now stands after the road was widened. It is called Old Town because that is where Croydon is thought to have originated from."
