Coulsdon North Railway Station

Coulsdon North railway station closed on Friday, 30th September 1983 having been part of the rail network for 84 years.

The station had closed in conjunction with the Brighton line modernisation and re-signalling scheme of the early 1980s, carried out by the then British Rail Southern Region.

Coincidentally, Coulsdon North station had opened as part of a scheme by the London to Brighton and South Coast Railway Company, in the late 1890s.

The station was opened by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company on the 5th November 1899.

The station up to closure had changed very little. It consisted of a large station building, four platforms, three of which had large canopies on them. These were all connected by a subway.

The station had opened as both a through and a terminus station. The station was renamed Coulsdon North from August 1923, by the Southern Railway who had also called the station Coulsdon West. The London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company, opened the station as Stoats Nest and Cane Hill, but following an accident at the station in January 1910, it was renamed as Coulsdon and Smitham Downs.

Coulsdon North station's journey to closure began in the 1960s. With three other stations in the Coulsdon area, weekend passenger services were withdrawn from September 1965 and the goods yard closed in 1968.

Off-peak passenger services were withdrawn from May 1970 and the station only opened from Monday to Friday for morning and evening peak periods.

The last train left the station on 30th September 1983.
