Praise for Norbury Farm

A small plot of open ground at the junction of Kensington and Norbury Avenues marks the location of one of the most historic sites in Norbury. The Norbury Farm House where an ancient courts for the Manor of Norbury were held. It was also the largest agricultural holdings in the area and the most important in Surrey.

By the mid 19th century the farm comprised of 200 acres and was occupied by Francis Tummons, a Yorkshireman, who cultivated 650 acres in the northern part of Croydon.

21 men and 13 women worked at the farm, many of them came from Ireland. One of these was William Dowsett a blacksmith who looked after 22 horses 

The ancient farmhouse was demolished in 1914.
