The Workman's Return
Mrs P Hall recalls some nostalgic memories. She was born in 1910. When she was 14 years old she left school, which was the normal thing to do in those days. Her first job was in a printers in Blackfriars Road, London. She walked avery day to Peckham High Street to catch the Tuppeny Workmans Return (2d in old currency). Herr mother used to give her 6d for corned beef, chips and an apple or a bun.
She recalls that once or twice she lost the 6d and had to walk to work and back again after an eight hour day. Her wages were ten shillings a week, that's 50 pence in today's decimal currency.
